BLESSINGS OVER THE CANDLES
Shabbat, festivals, Rosh ha-Shanah, and Yom Kippur are all welcomed into the home by the lighting of candles. Customarily at least two candles are lit. For Shabbat and for holidays in general, candle-lighting time precedes sunset in order to avoid inadvertently transgressing the prohibitions of kindling or transferring fire. When the second day of a holiday falls on a weekday, or when a holiday begins as Shabbat ends, the earliest time to light candles is after the conclusion of the first day of the holiday or of Shabbat.
ON SHABBAT:
Baruch atah adonai elohenu melech ha-olam, asher kid-shanu b'mitzvotav v'tsivanu l'hadlik ner shel shabbot.
Blessed are You, Lord - our God, Ruler of the Universe - who has made us holy by giving us commandments, and has commanded us to kindle the Sabbath lights.
ON FESTIVALS:
Baruch atah adonai eluhenu melech ha-olam, asher kid-shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel (shabbat v') yom tov.
Blessed are You, Lord - Our God, Ruler of the Universe - who has made us holy by giving us commandments, and has commanded us to kindle the (Sabbath and) Festival lights.
Baruch atah adonai elohenu melech ha-olam, shehe-heyanu, v'kiy'manu, v'higi'anu la-z'man ha-zeh.
Blessed are You, Lord - our God, Ruler of the Universe - who has kept us alive, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this moment.
