Religious Tolerance Title Image

Angel of Peace ImageIt has been brought to my attention that, although we citizens of these United States like to believe we are tolerant and accepting of others beliefs, in reality this is not the practice. This is not anything new, but it would seem that with the advent of the internet we would have learned more about each other and the things we have in common.

Ever since the attacks on September 11, 2001, there is suspicion of anyone who does not meet the standards of the prevailing thought or "political correctness." It is no longer acceptable to express proper holiday greetings as it may offend. This is a very sad situation in a country such as these United States. What can we do to be more accepting of our fellow residents of the universe?

War is being waged all over the world and there appears to be no end in sight. The attacks on September 11, 2001 is only partly responsible - the wars in Iraq and Afganistan. These military actions may not be for the stated reasons, but we are already involved and will be for many years.

There is the ongoing conflict in the Middle East between Israel and the Arab countries. This conflict cannot be resolved until there is some mutual respect between for what each holds holy in the Middle Ease and elsewhere. Muslims and Jews must gradually learn to appreciate the wisdom within each other's tradition. This is the only way the peace process will succeed.

There are so many other conflicts in this world . . . and it would appear that no one cares. I, frankly, believe we are so overwhelmed by all the media coverage we feel helpless and that there is no solution to situations created by the world leaders. Do they care? Do they keep us informed? Are we incapable, as many in power have always believed, of coping with the truth?

The internet allows us to communicate with people from many countries and cultures. This is a good thing to be able to share ideas with each other. Are we open minded and tolerant of people with beliefs that are different from our own? World Religions have more in common than differences. The message is just worded differently. Peace Seeds is an excellent resource where she begins with:

"Like the bee gathering honey from the different flowers,
the wise person accepts the essence of the different
scriptures and sees only the good in all religions."
